In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and disconnected. Yet, one of the simplest and most effective remedies lies just beyond our doorstep – nature. The relationship between nature and mental health is profound, offering refuge for our minds and wellbeing. Here are the many benefits that embracing the natural world can bring…

A breath of fresh air

Something we’re all familiar with is the uplift that comes from a walk in the park or the calming effect of a gentle breeze. Studies consistently show that spending time outdoors reduces stress, anxiety, and depression. According to the Mental Health Foundation, nearly half (45%) of people in the UK reported that visiting green spaces, such as parks, helped them cope with stress during the pandemic.

Boosting physical health

Engaging in physical activities like gardening and walking not only strengthens our bodies but also our minds. When combined with the beauty of the outdoors and nature, the benefits are amplified, leaving us feeling more energised and positive.

Social connection

Spending time in nature often brings us into contact with others, helping us develop social connections that are vital for mental health. Activities like group gardening sessions, or just enjoying a green space can create opportunities for meaningful interactions and shared experiences, reducing feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Mindfulness

Nature offers a wonderful opportunity for mindfulness. The sights, sounds, and smells of the outdoors can ground us in the present moment, helping to calm the constant chatter of our minds. According to the Mental Health Foundation, people with a strong connection to nature tend to be happier and experience lower levels of anxiety and depression.

Creativity and inspiration

Nature’s beauty and peacefulness can be an incredible catalyst for creativity and problem-solving. By stepping away from our screens and immersing ourselves in nature, we can open up to new ideas and perspectives.

An outdoor sanctuary

Nature provides a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of modern life. It’s a place where we can unwind, recharge, and find some peace. This escape and sense of renewal are essential for keeping our mental health in check, helping us get back to our daily lives with a clearer mind and a brighter outlook.

Nature is at the heart of our approach to supporting young people. It’s woven into every aspect of our programmes, whether it’s a one-on-one mentoring session outdoors, a walk through a green space, horticultural activities at our therapeutic green space, or a problem solving activity using natural materials.

Many of the young people we work with have faced mental health difficulties that are often  linked with social isolation and a lack of engagement in work or training prospects. Our programmes combine coaching with nature-based projects to help trainees combat social isolation, boost their wellbeing, and develop employability skills.

The impact of our nature-based approach is significant. Trainees report increased confidence, improved social connections, and a greater sense of purpose.
